Beyond the Score: Using Statistical Analysis to Unlock Test Insights
A Session by Gerardo Castillo (Teacher, Mustang Public Schools)
About this Session
School Administrators and Educators often rely on raw test scores to assess student performance, but statistical analysis can reveal far deeper insights. Trends and averages alone can be misleading, but statistical tests provide measurable significance, helping schools make data-driven decisions with confidence.
In this hands-on session, you’ll learn how to analyze student test data using practical statistical methods in Google Sheets.
Ever looked at a multiple-choice test distribution and debated whether students were guessing? I’ll demonstrate how to run a chi-square test to detect guessing patterns in multiple-choice questions. We’ll also apply statistical tests like t-tests to compare teacher results and conduct standard-level analysis to identify curricular strengths and areas for improvement.
Through step-by-step demonstrations, you’ll see how to use formulas, interpret p-values, and visualize trends with charts and statistical analyses. By the end of the session, you’ll have the skills to transform raw scores into meaningful insights—empowering you to pinpoint areas for intervention, evaluate instructional effectiveness, and drive student success with evidence-based decisions.
