Evidence in Action: Using Implementation Data to Strengthen MTSS
A Session by Alison Augustson and Matt Harriger
About this Session
Effective Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) rely on the strategic use of data to guide decision-making and improve student outcomes. While student outcome data—such as academic performance and behavioral indicators—provides insights into the impact of instruction and interventions, it is not sufficient on its own. Implementation data, which focuses on the actions of adults in the system, is equally critical. This data captures how consistently and effectively educators are implementing core practices, interventions, and support systems. When implementation data is combined with student outcome data, teams gain a comprehensive understanding of what is working, or not working, and why. This dual approach ensures that decisions are not based solely on results but also on the processes that produce them, ultimately creating more effective and equitable systems for all students. This session will focus on different types of implementation data, how MTSS teams can use implementation data to identify potential gaps between intended practices and actual execution, and how MTSS teams can use these insights to pinpoint areas where additional training, resources, or adjustments may be needed in their MTSS.
